Minnesota United signs another Cameroonian international

A few weeks after the Loons signed Cameroonian international Frantz Pangop, they’ve now added another Cameroonian, defender Bertrand Owundi Eko’o.

A couple of weeks behind schedule, Minnesota United have finally signed the second Cameroonian international that was teased about a month ago by CEO Chris Wright. The Loons have brought in Cameroonian international Bertrand Owundi Eko’o on a free transfer from Cameroonian club Rainbow FC.

If Rainbow FC sounds familiar, it’s because they’ve produced MLS players like Nouhou Tolo (Seattle Sounders) and Eric Ayuk (Union loanee), as well as Montpellier full-back Ambroise Oyongo, formerly of the Montreal Impact.

Who is Eko’o?

Though Eko’o is a complete unknown, he stands at an imposing 6’2”, and was known in Cameroon as an excellent passer. Eko’o is a versatile player, with the ability to play as a Center back in addition to his preferred position of Defensive Midfielder.

The Loons have needed depth at both of those positions, so it could be a good addition if he pans out. It will be interesting to see how Eko’o adjusts to MLS, and how much time he gets for the club this season. Or will he end up spending time at the club’s USL affiliate in St. Louis.

However, you have to question the use of international spots by the Loons, as they’ve now used two of what is supposed to be a precious commodity on depth pieces from the Cameroonian league. It seems like Minnesota’s front office is trying to get things done for cheap while coasting on talking up a shiny new stadium that’s on the horizon.

There’s nothing wrong with using the money ball tactic on occasion if you scout well, and maybe the Loons have found a couple of diamonds in the rough here. But Adrian Heath even said himself after last season that the club was in need of at least 4 or 5 starting-quality players, and the Loons have yet to add anyone who is going to move the needle for the club.

As fan frustration grows, the front office better figure something out, and fast. They say you only have one chance to make a first impression, and quite frankly, Minnesota United have done a poor job of that in an already crowded Twin Cities sports market. We’ll see if Minnesota can get a starting quality player in before the start of the season because it’s no secret that they need at least one.
