Once again rumors of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the LA Galaxy have surfaced. However, recent events in the transfer window may finally see him land in MLS.

Yes, we know you’ve heard this rumor before. However, after past connections with both the LA Galaxy and LAFC, it appears that the Swedish legend – Zlatan Ibrahimovic – is almost a member of MLS.

ESPN’s Taylor Twellman reported that the Galaxy is close to securing his signature, but surprisingly not planning to use a DP spot. Two key factors to consider here. First, Beckham was brought to MLS, and the Galaxy, on a deal that saw a sponsor (Herbalife) cover part of his contract, which could be an option here.

But second, more likely and more important, is how the league continues to expand team’s budgets and freedom with allocation money means players like Zlatan can be signed outside of the three DP spots.

Why now?

Returning from a knee injury Manchester United had planned to use Zlatan during the second half of the EPL season. However, the club was able to sign Alexis Sanchez away from Arsenal during the January window. With Sanchez, Lukaku, Martial, Rashford, and Lingard, the Red Devils no longer need Ibrahimovic.

His contract expires at the end of June, so moving him in January at least returns some cash for United before the summer. The Galaxy meanwhile are in a dramatic rebuilding year under Sigi Schmid, plus feel the pressure to rebound quickly with new rivals LAFC entering the league.

Does Zlatan fit for the Galaxy?

The Galaxy recently traded Gyasi Zardes to the Columbus Crew for Ola Kamara. Kamara has netted 34 goals over his last two MLS seasons and is a piece sorely missing in LA. However, after him, Bradford Jamieson IV is the most likely target forward.

Zlatan is returning from a knee injury and will likely need a few months to get into full fitness. Ola is ready to go day one for LA, but having Zlatan’s experience in the locker room and presence on the field would be tremendous for the club. Not to mention the marketing and international recognition the Galaxy are used to, but sorely missing since losing David Beckham, Robbie Keane, and Landon Donovan.

Zlatan bucks the recent younger star player signings to MLS. But it’s Zlatan. He brings a swagger and will score goals. The Galaxy need both.
