The Importance of Red Bulls II

The Red Bulls have always been one of the top clubs in North America at churning out talented players through their system. What separates the Red Bulls from other clubs is their willingness to sign and play kids that come up from the academy. The Red Bulls have signed a staggering six players from their academy system or USL side this off-season.

Ben Mines, Kevin Politz, and Amando Moreno

The Red Bulls are willing to take chances with young players like Tyler Adams and Alex Muyl. Ben Mines might be the next teenager to get senior team minutes. At age 17, Mines turned down an offer to play with Stanford University to sign a Homegrown contract with New York. Mines made 11 appearances last year with Red Bulls II and scored twice. In 2017, Mines won the Golden Boot at the Generation Adidas Cup.

Politz played with the Red Bulls U-23 PDL side the past two summers and just signed as a Homegrown Player. The 22-year-old played four years with Wake Forest where he anchored their back line. Politz was named ACC Defensive Player of the year in 2017, helping Wake Forest reach the NCAA Quarter-finals.

Moreno came up through the Red Bulls academy and signed a homegrown deal in 2012. Moreno left New York and spent the last four years with Club Tijuana. The 22 year-old forward did not fare well in his time in Mexico, and will have a tough task ahead of him to break into the starting XI.
