Transfer Rumors: James Rodriguez linked with a move to MLS
The Columbian midfielder has been linked with a winter move to Major League Soccer. There is likely real interest for his services, but a move is unlikely
In one of the more off the wall transfer rumors to date, James Rodriguez has been rumored with a move to Major League Soccer. The rumor first came from Sportbild, a German media outlet. James currently plies his trade with German powerhouse Bayern Munich, and has been playing well so far with the Bundesliga leaders after falling down the depth chart with Spanish side, Real Madrid.
The Sportbild report listed New York City FC and Orlando City SC as two potential targets, which makes sense, as the two clubs are known for spending more for their designated players than most other MLS teams. A move to Orlando City would also make sense, as the Lions are likely looking for a replacement for Brazilian legend, Kaka, who will likely retire at the end of this season.
According to the MLS Player’s Union, Kaka is the highest paid player in the league at just over $7-million a year. However, with Bayern Munich, James is rumored to be making over $20-million a year for his services, a price that would cost more than most MLS teams pay for their entire roster, combined.

Landing James, currently 26, would be one of the biggest signings in MLS history, similar to that of Los Angeles FC signing Carlos Vela for their debut season. However, with the 2018 World Cup just around the corner and James being the vocal point of Colombia, a winter move in the months building up to the World Cup make a move even more unlikely.
