The biggest news for the USL came from outside of its own “touchlines” this week.

NISA is a new Division III entrant with the announced goal of putting an 8 team league on the field for next year, 2018. If the league can hit that deadline (read the press release carefully…) it would give NISA a 1 year head start on USL’s plans for a Div III. It would also give the NASL (which seems to be following these developments with great interest) a natural “partner” as they pursue their own future agenda. That agenda could be simply to up the ante in the competition with USL to be the most popular Div II in the US soccer pyramid. But it could also be to compete and/or combine with MLS at the very top in keeping with the growing sentiment and interest in developing a system of relegation and promotion in the US game. Stay tuned to MLSMultiplex in the coming days as we attempt to unravel it all.

Meanwhile, back on the grass…
