USL West: Monarchs take a hit, “butterfly down”?

For most of the summer the Western Conference was more a match race between Real Monarchs of Salt Lake City and San Antonio FC. But that all seemed to fall apart after the two drew, 2-2, on July 22. The race for second place opened up as San Antonio slipped into a string of no-decision matches, stalling their points total. Now, this past weekend, Monarchs lost only their third match of the year away to Oklahoma City. But that small stumble and a positive turn in fortunes for some mid-table teams has brought even the conference title back into play over the season’s final third.
