USL races shift gears as “new” franchise gets green light for 2019

You read that right: the USL is expanding…what else is new? In this case, the league is actually re-expanding since Austin officially had a member club as lately as 2015. There had been a lot of conflicting information as to what happened to that franchise the past two seasons. Suffice it to say that the official press release for this announcement does not mention the previous club by its name: “Aztex”. And the wikipedia page for Austin Aztex now says this: “A new USL team based in Austin will enter in 2019 under a new name.” New team, new name, new ownership group, so why not a new ground? So the new club looks to pitch its tent at the Circuit of the Americas outside of Austin. Currently COTA is best known as the site of the United States Grand Prix race on the Formula 1 international circuit.

Meanwhile, the league’s conference races have some clubs running under caution…
