With the Gold Cup coming up in July, the USMNT’s new jerseys for the tournament have appeared to have surfaced online.
This new kit for the USMNT is as American as it gets. While the more recent jerseys for the USMNT have mainly featured a single solid color, this new jersey features navy blue and crimson red horizontal stripes.
The last the USMNT wore a jersey that had stripes was in 2012. Those jerseys were all white with red horizontal stripes and a blue collar. A lot of people referred to that kit as the “Where’s Waldo” jerseys.
Perhaps the most notable feature on these jerseys is the dark navy blue sleeves. Each sleeve has a row of white stars on them. The blue horizontal stripes also have smaller navy colored stars on them.
This is the first USMNT jersey to prominently feature stars since the away jerseys the team wore for the 1994 World Cup. Those jerseys had much larger white stars, but this kit definitely has plenty of more stars. The Nike logo is also white along with the kit names and numbers.
These jerseys are also the first navy blue ones the USMNT has worn since 2013. That kit was primarily navy blue with white sleeves and a large black stripe across the middle.
Nike definitely borrowed some elements from previous designs for this new kit and that isn’t a bad thing. For the most part, the immediate online response to the new kit has been really positive.
According to multiple sources, including Alexi Lalas who tweeted details about the new kit back in February, these jerseys will only be used for the Gold Cup. Lalas also announced that there would be a new full-time jersey for the USMNT.
