Alex Morgan and Lyon Claim UEFA Champions League Title
By Daniel Garza
Alex Morgan has added another trophy to her long list of accomplishments as Lyon defeated Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout in the UEFA Champions League final.
Despite leaving the match early on, Morgan’s night ended on a happy note as she watched goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi convert a penalty that gave Lyon the title. The match was contested in Cardiff City, Wales where the men’s final will be played this coming Saturday.
Morgan has been sidelined with a hamstring injury for the past few weeks and it flared up again just 18 minutes into the match and she was subsequently substituted in the 22nd minute.
This is the fourth time Lyon has won the Champions League, as they are now tied with Frankfurt for the most European titles in women’s soccer.
Lyon has claimed two other trophies this season as they won the French first division and the French Cup competition.
Time well spent for Morgan
It was a successful time in Europe for Morgan, she accomplished quite a lot in her short time with the club and her fellow United States Women’s National teammates have excelled at their respective European clubs as well.
With a pair of friendlies upcoming for the USWNT in Scandinavia, it is unlikely Morgan will be in the lineup for either of the matches. Her return to the Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League may also be delayed as the club is well into their season and depending on the severity of the hamstring injury her playing time this month could be limited.

All-in-all, this was a good move for one of the USWNT’s best players. She was exposed to a different style of play and was able to be featured in a lineup that is full of talent and star-studded players.
Morgan finishes the season with nine goals in 10 appearances in all competitions.
