Who is going to land Keisuke Honda?
By Dylan Walsh
The Japanese international posted a message on his Twitter account all but confirming his departure from the Rossoneri at the end of his current contract with the Italian giants. But one question still remains unclear, who will the playmaker join in the summer?
It’s official. Keisuke Honda will leave AC Milan this summer.
MLS, of course, is one of the most likely destinations for Honda, given how at the age of 30 the Milan number 10 would still be an effective player for a major club, and given how Asian players seem to be an untapped market for MLS clubs, Honda could be the player the kick-start a whole new trend for MLS franchises.
“But which MLS team?” I hear you say; well, Honda has plenty to choose from. The forerunners for the signature of the Japanese international is currently the Seattle Sounders, when it was reported in late February of this year that the current MLS Cup holders were on the verge of signing Honda, but since then the rumour has gone cold.
The question of whether or not Honda will join the Sounders is something that has already been discussed, and the acquisition of the versatile midfielder would easily make the Sounders one of the most feared teams in the league.
Adding identity
But, who says Honda will go to Seattle? A handful of MLS teams still have an open DP spot, and a player of Honda’s quality could agree terms with a club without having astronomical wages, so who else should go for him?
You know what team need needs a DP with a worldwide reputation? The San Jose Earthquakes.
The two-time MLS Cup winners have been going through somewhat of an identity crisis in the past few seasons. And although they have the never-ageing
Chris Wondolowski firing on all cylinders in this campaign, the Earthquake’s need that extra element of creativity to take them from a side that could make the play-offs, to a team that could compete in the play-offs. Honda could be that missing element for San Jose.
A move down south
One final team that could benefit with the addition of a quality DP is a franchise that has stunned MLS fans far-and-wide this season, the Houston Dynamo. Let’s be honest here, nobody thought Dynamo would amount to anything this season, let aloe be serious contenders for a top three spot in the Western Conference.
Erick Torres has been one of the most feared strikers in MLS this season, and with the supporting cast finally starting to click this season, Houston could be in with a real shot of winning the MLS Club. Add a player of Honda’s level of quality and versatility to the mix, and now we have a side of MLS Cup winning quality.
