USL Week 10: SLC Rivets As Phoenix Pivots, Battery’s Up As the Rowdies Go Down

Real Monarchs of SLC are undefeated in May and winners of their last 5 straight. That has them firmly in 2d place in the USL Western Conference, just 2 points off San Antonio’s lead and eleven clear of 3d.  Phoenix Rising FC are another 10 points back just two spots from dead last despite having won 3 of their own last 5.  Frank Yallop left the team nearly a month ago, but Rising have only now announced the hiring of his replacement this past Monday.  Patrice Carteron, former Mali National Team manager, will be the new head man at Phoenix.

Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference, Charleston Battery held onto their place at the top of the table with a 1-0 victory away to Bethlehem on Thursday night. That coupled with a loss for Tampa Bay Rowdies the night before combined to give the Battery a slim 3 point lead.

Here’s a look at a couple of interesting match-ups for the weekend.

Orlando City B (H) v. Charlotte Independence

Last Time Out: OCB had the last week off.  The team’s last outing was a 2-0 win away to FC Cincinnati.  Charlotte  has also enjoyed a layoff from USL play.  Independence’ last match was a 5-1 home victory over New York Red Bulls II on May 11.

Players To Watch For: Orlando played Charlotte to a 1-1 draw at home earlier this season.  OCB keeper Earl Edwards stopped a point-blank header to preserve the tie in extra time the last time against Charlotte. If his team can get Edwards a lead of any kind they can probably win and perhaps eventually make a run at the conference leaders.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (H) v. Reno 1868 FC

Last Time Out: Switchbacks lost away to the aforementioned streaking Monarchs, 2-5, last Saturday.  Reno, playing at home, defeated Tulsa Roughnecks, 4-0.

Players To Watch For: Reno are screaming hot right now.  They have won their last 3 matches scoring 4 or more goals in each game. And they’ve kept a clean sheet all the while.  Striker Dane Kelly is piling up the goals.  But behind him Chris Wehan and Lindo Mfeka — the latter on loan from MLS’ San Jose Earthquakes — are making things pretty easy for him.
