Montreal Impact: Three Takeaways Against Portland

The Montreal Impact defeated the 10-man Portland Timbers on Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 rout.

An afternoon of records and firsts saw the Impact record their third victory of the season at Saputo Stadium.

The hosts were the first to score as Ignacio Piatti scored his first of the afternoon from the spot. Five minutes later, Diego Chara struck Piatti in the face and was immediately sent off. Thus, the Timbers would play the remaining 70 minutes a man down.

A 43rd-minute header would double the advantage for the Impact as Kyle Fisher dispatched a powerful effort past Jake Gleeson. Diego Valeri quickly brought an end to the two-goal advantage as he scored in the stoppage time to get the Timbers on the board.

Two more goals would be scored in the second half as the Impact pulled away against an exhausted Timbers defense. The first came from Piatti in the 50th minute and then Ambroise Oyongo would add a fourth in the 77th minute to put the game away.

Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s match.

1. Piatti and Camara sets record

The brace from Piatti allowed him to move past Marco Di Vaio as the club’s all-time leading scorer in the league with 35 Major League Soccer goals. This is the first brace of the season for Piatti, he recorded three two-goal matches in the 2016 season. In his last six appearances for the Impact, Piatti has scored four goals.

Additionally, another record was set as Hassoun Camara surpassed the 10,000-minute mark for the Impact. The defender has played six seasons for the Canadian club.

2. Fisher scores first career goal

A hard fought match from Fisher was rewarded with his first half goal. It was the first of his career and it came after spending some time on the ground after a collision with Fanendo Adi, with a head bandage and all, he was still able to score. It was a very impressive performance from the 22-year-old.

3. Positive result to build off of

May was the best month of the season for the Impact thus far. Saturday’s win was the last match the club will play in the MLS in May. With the Canadian Championships on the horizon, the club look poised for more improvement as they continue to work their way up the table.
