High Scoring Midfielders Were a Theme Across the League in Week 11

There were goals all over the place across the league. It was great for your fantasy team if you loaded up on midfielders. Not so much if you were banking on defenders and keepers to have a big day. The team of the week certainly reflected that as well.

Hat trick hero Justin Meram was the high scorer for the week, but several players were close behind. Nemanja Nikolic, Haris Medunjanin and Tosaint Ricketts either hit or were right at the 20 point mark. That’s what happens when nearly every game has goals flying in.

Three Hits and Misses

Hit: Tim Howard

It’s been a rough season for Howard, but he had a good week for those who have stuck with him. His high price tag has played a factor in him dropping to only being owned by 4.7%, but he picked up a big 8 points.

Miss: Tim Melia

This was the first real poor fantasy week from the leading scorer among keepers. Only 1 point is certainly not helping the over 20% of owners who picked him up.

Hit: New England Defenders

It wasn’t a great week for defenders, unless you picked up one from the Revolution. Chris Tierney had 16, Andrew Farrell and Antonio Delamea also picked up 9.

Miss: Joevin Jones

He’s been a fantastic fantasy pickup this year, but Seattle let in four goals and then Jones picked up a red card in the closing minutes. That’s a loss of three points for over 14% of fantasy owners.

Hit: Justin Meram

More on Meram’s monster game. His 23 points vaulted him as the overall leader in points for the season. He’s up to 87 after his hat trick.

Miss: David Villa

Not because he had a bad game, but he was agonizingly close to cashing in even more. He only had 4 points, which isn’t awful, but his spectacular free kick that clanged off the crossbar was just a few inches from even more points for the almost 30% of owners that picked him. He does’t even get the assist credit for Tommy MacNamara launching himself and the ball into the back of the net after his shot.

Three Players To Pick Up

Gerso Fernandes

One of 10 (yes 10!) double game week teams this week, Gerso is likely to play all 180 of Sporting’s minutes this week. He will also be the direct beneficiary of Joevin Jones sitting out due to his red card suspension.

C.J. Sapong

Philadelphia is the only DGW team not traveling this week, so the Union should be fresh. They are also riding a two game winning streak and looking much better overall.

Brandon Vincent

Chicago has a lighter travel schedule this week compared to some other team’s brutal load. He has also been Chicago’s iron man this year, loading up on minutes for the Fire.
