Toronto FC score two late goals to beat the Columbus Crew for their fifth straight victory.

These aren’t your mama’s Toronto FC, that’s for sure. Toronto FC won their fifth straight game for the first time in franchise history. Columbus dominated for 80 minutes of the game not giving Toronto many chances to score.

Toronto fell behind 1-0 on a Frederico Higuain cheeky penalty attempt. After Jozy Altidore was taken down in the box Toronto had to chance to tie the game before the half, but Zack Steffan was equal to the task making the big save.

After trying to break the Columbus defense down for 10-minutes Toronto finally got a breakthrough. Tossaint Ricketts latched onto a perfectly placed ball by Raheem Edwards in the 81st minute for the first goal. Five minutes after the first goal Ricketts would find the back of the net again after a cross into the box from Edwards with Vazquez getting the deftest of touches to send it into the path of Ricketts for the second and Toronto’s fifth win of the season. Toronto will now head home and take on expansion side Minnesota United, but will Giovinco be back in the lineup?

Player that stood out

Raheem Edwards. The kid has been great since coming up from Toronto FC II early on in the season. His pace down the wing makes it hard for defenders to keep him in front of them. He’s got great vision and a great IQ for the game. Assisting on both goals last night gives Edwards four on the season. His first assist was a thing of beauty as he perfectly placed a ball over the top to Ricketts to run on to. Toronto FC and the Canadian National Team have a star in the makings so the world should be on notice…….well maybe just North America for now.

Why they won

That’s the age old question…..you have to be lucky to be good they say. Columbus dominated Toronto the whole game and weren’t given many chances to score. But with every good team if you wear your opponent enough sooner or later you’re going to break them down. The speed of Edwards was no match for the defenders and it proved costly as he was the creator of both goals and deserves all the credit he is getting.
