Atlanta United FC will look to continue to build its identity this weekend while DC United will hope to rediscover a quality identity of their own.
Atlanta United FC has lit the league up in goals, offensive play, and exciting technical skill in its inaugural season. They will host DC United this week, which has been struggling to score many goals of their own.
A look at how each club is doing after eight week’s of MLS action, who to watch as the two teams face off, and a scoreline prediction.
Atlanta United FC
- Current Record (W-L-D): 3-2-2
- Last Time Out: 1-3 Win at Real Salt Lake
- Player to Watch For: Miguel Almiron. With two goals and four assists, the Paraguayan player has been active in both creating and scoring goals. Previously a European target, Almiron could become a MVP candidate before the end of the season with his speed, vision, and quick movement on the ball.
- Why They Win: Atlanta is a genuine attacking powerhouse under legendary coach Tata Martino. With countless attacking options, they have a real opportunity to make a statement game through taking advantage of a struggling DC midfield and backline.
- Why They Won’t: Atlanta is still a young team with defensive issues of its own. DC United, when playing well, can create a stout defensive front which could cause discomfort and frustration for a young team.
DC United
- Current Record (W-L-D): 2-2-3
- Last Time Out: 2-2 Draw away at New England
- Player to Watch For: Luciano Acosta. With a limited two goals and zero assists (compared to last years 11 assists), Acosta has struggled this year with a nagging ankle injury and saw limited minutes last week to help rehabilitate it. Despite a lack of final ball or touch, Acosta has still been the most technical player on any field he’s played on and is likely to cause trouble in Atlanta’s midfield.
- Why They Win: DC seemingly has all the right pieces, but no one is individually playing up to what they’ve shown they can do. Whether this is age showing on the backline and wings, or coaching, DC can be both an offensive and defensive juggernaut when everyone clicks together
- Why They Won’t: DC United’s defensive midfield is a net negative for this team, with poor link-up play preventing any potential offensive developments. This team still seems to be discovering its identity and without a strong team effort, a loss looks likely, though the season is far from over.
