Former Chelsea Great and Montreal Impact stricker Didier Drogba Transfers to Phoenix’ USL Franchise.

All world-class striker, Didier Drogba, today announced he’s moving to the USL.

Drogba, 39, is a former winner of both the English Premiership and the UEFA Champions League. He also led his nation’s men’s team, Ivory Coast, to three straight World Cup Final appearances. He retired from international play in 2014.

Phoenix Might Actually Be Rising

As Drogba’s tweet indicates, he and the present ownership of PA are looking up.  For now, there is no path to promotion (or relegation for that matter) in place in the US’ soccer pyramid.

USL presently shares second tier status with NASL in that same pyramid.  The US Soccer Federation (USSF) not only granted USL second tier, but allowed the league to create a lower, third tier as well. The addition of that third tier could create the potential for both relegation and promotion.  A system of promotion is common in the world of club soccer, most notably in Europe.

Phoenix Rising FC have just opened a new soccer specific stadium in Tempe.  The club is under serious consideration for MLS expansion and the acquisition of a star like Drogba might seal the deal.

USL Gains More Star Power

Of course, a move to the MLS is still in the franchise’s future.  In the short term, the impact of Drogba’s star power in the USL will be undeniable, but not exactly unique.

He spent last season with MLS’ Montreal Impact, appearing in 33 matches and scoring 21 goals. He now joins another former Chelsea teammate, Shaun Wright-Phillips, at Phoenix.  Drogba will also share striking duty with former CD Guadalajara (“Chivas”) star, Omar Bravo.

Bravo is Chivas’ all-time leading goal scorer.  Like Drogba SWP also has international experience, with England.  He is also “stepping down” from MLS’ NYRB organization at least until Phoenix does rise.
