NYCFC: 3 Takeaways from the Montreal Impact game

After Saturday’s 1-1 draw against the Montreal Impact, a look at three key takeaways from NYCFC’s result and moving forward.
Coming off a commanding 4-0 victory over D.C United a week ago, NYCFC was looking for consecutive victories. Going with a similar set-up, Patrick Vieira made a lone switch on the defensive line in where Ethan White made his season debut on the right side of the defense.
The boys in blue got on the scoreboard first thanks to another Rodney Wallace goal, but early in the second half, the Montreal Impact knotted everything up. Despite putting some real chances on goal, NYCFC walked away with one lone point.
Not entirely bad for Vieira’s squad right before they hit the international break, but you definitely sensed the frustration. Another game with more ball possession and more shots, Vieira believed his boys deserved the three points.
With that being said, here’s a look at three takeaways from the Impact draw.
1. Rodney Wallace Shines Again.
We all know how busy Vieira was this off-season, signing a handful of midfielders. Ironically enough, I am a firm believer that his last signing was hist best. Despite a shady NYCFC debut, Wallace has become a star in Vieira’s in the last two games.
Finding the net in back to back games, Wallace has evidently been finding the connection between his new teammates, especially David Villa. Primarily a true left-back, Wallace has the ability to play any position on the left side. With Ronald Matarrita solidifying the defensive position on the left side, Vieira has found the right spot for Wallace on the attack.
With all the international players that Vieira has collected, Wallace brings the MLS experience that this club needs.
2. Prince Jack Finding His Stride
When it comes to young talent, it’s key to look for consistency. In his rookie year, Jack Harrison stole our hearts with his skills and goals. In his sophomore year, everyone will be looking for Harrison to do the same and if not, more. We’re looking for that consistency from the prince of NYCFC.
In Saturday’s game, Harrison didn’t score a goal, but he showed that flare fans all fell in love with. Believe it or not, Harrison is a big part of this NYCFC squad despite his age. Vieira sees some potential in this kid and against Impact, he was finding his stride.
He used his quickness to cut around defenders and make some key passes. The goal against the Impact all started from Harrison. His speed and swift leg moves fooled the defender and crossed the ball to Alexander Ring, who then found Wallace.

3. Getting To See The Rookie In Action.
This early in the season, of course, getting the victory is all you’re looking for. Especially in 1-1 match, the fans are looking for that one player to make a spark. You could also look for how the squad is playing and how the chemistry looks.
With all of Vieira’s signings, in the 78th minute, he opted to use his rookie. NYCFC’s 2017 first round pick Jonathan Lewis made his career debut and that was a big takeaway. It might’ve been just 12 minutes of action, but Vieira using Lewis is a huge sign.
We’ve seen this trend, a manager builds up minutes for a player to get in the rhythm of everything. That could be the case for Lewis as Vieira might be looking to break him in his first team plans. There’s something about Lewis upfront with Harrison brings a smile to your face and if doesn’t, you’re not thinking about NYCFC’s future.
