MLS: Top 5 Goals from Matchday Two
By Daniel Garza
The second week of the Major League Soccer season is in the books, with a total of 29 goals scored over the course of the weekend. Here are the top five from the weekend.
#5 Rodney Wallace (New York City FC)
An acrobatic finish from Wallace gives the Costa Rican his first goal for the club and the first of four for NYCFC in their win over D.C. United. The midfielder has already matched his season goal scoring total from last year.
#4 Ignacio Piatti (Montreal Impact)
Piatti opens up his 2017 goal account with this fantastic individual effort, as the Argentinian places it perfectly past the goalkeeper. The striker scored 17 goals in 2016 for the Impact and should be near that number again this season.
#3 Erick “Cubo” Torres (Houston Dynamo)
For the second consecutive week, Torres scored one of the top goals, as this curling effort put an exclamation point on the Dynamo’s 3-1 win over the Columbus Crew. After failing to score in the past two seasons, it appears Torres could be on his way towards a memorable year with the Texas club.
#2 Anibal Godoy (San Jose Earthquakes)
Coming in at number two, for the second consecutive week, is Godoy. The Panamanian is off to hot start in 2017 and scores the match-winning goal against the Vancouver Whitecaps with this top class finish. Godoy scored the winner against the Montreal Impact on matchday one as well. He only needs one more goal to set a career high in his third season in the MLS.
#1 Miguel Almirón (Atlanta United)
A wonderful hit from Miguel Almirón in Atlanta United’s first ever win in the MLS comes in at No.1. The Paraguayan scored a brace in the 6-1 win, which was his first two goals in his MLS career. The 23-year-old had a terrific match to silence the early season critics questioning the impact he would have on the club.
