MLS Fantasy: Match Day 1 Preview
As you know, MLS 2017 season starts up again this Friday and along with it so does MLS Fantasy! MLS Fantasy gets competitive so with it we will preview all the rule changes and players to look out for!
MLS Fantasy 2017 looks more enticing than ever with all the new additions that have arrived in MLS. This year there will be wider pool of players to choose from considering the addition of Atlanta and Minnesota in the league. Along with the addition of those teams MLS now has the likes of Romain Alessandrini, Miguel Almiron, Fredy Montero, and Sebastian Blanco. This also means… more and better players to pick from in MLS Fantasy. Before diving into what players are MUST gets, let’s review some of the new MLS rules found on mlssoccer.com
MLS Fantasy Rules
- First things first you have $100 Million to spend on 15 players. Spend it wisely as you have that amount to spread out over 11 starters and 4 bench players.
- NEW rule: Unlimited Transfers. Yup, it’s true! This year you can stack the starting eleven and maybe invest in one good bench player. That way if an injury or bye week arises, all you have to do is transfer your players because of the no transfer limits.
- Choose your desired formation. You’re the coach here, put out whatever formation will rake in the points or your team’s favorite formation if you like!

4 players for your squad
1) The Superstar
Sebastian Giovinco should be the man everyone has in their MLS Fantasy squads, he has racked up 255 and 251 fantasy points in his 2 seasons in MLS…’nuff said! Seba will play every minute most likely at striker for a Toronto squad that is stacked head to toe. This could be the year Giovinco leads Toronto to the MLS Cup and I am sure he’ll be in the MVP & Golden Boot discussion as well.
Sebastian Giovinco led MLS in goals his first season and last year although injured for a month or two he was right there close to the golden boot again. Likewise, if you’re looking for some MLS Fantasy Magic Giovinco is your man.
2. The Newcomer
Cristian Colman is the #9 FC Dallas has been waiting for. Coming in from Paraguay’s biggest team, Nacional, and the Paraguayan National Team Colman is a force to be reckoned with. Last year FC Dallas was MLS’s best team in the regular season winning the Supporters Shield up top.
That was with Maxi Urruti as the lone striker and not to bag on Urruti but imagine what FCD could do with a young hungry forward? If you’re looking for a striker that will consistently finish the crosses and passes from Barrios, Morales, Diaz, Acosta, and Lamah look no further than a surefire goal scorer in Colman.
3.The Rock
Axel Sjoberg was arguably MLS’s best defender last year and proved it with the points he racked up in MLS Fantasy. He managed to start 30 games for the Colorado Rapids in his sophomore season. That translated to 164 MLS Fantasy points behind his back line’s 13 clean sheets.
Sjoberg is only getting better from here as the Swede will be up for more points with a change in the fantasy rules. Clean Sheets will now be worth 5 points for defenders so expect Axel to rack up points for you!

4. The Maestro
Diego Valeri’s name strikes fear into any opponent you will have in MLS Fantasy, trust us! Valeri is and will continue to be Portland’s playmaker. He has set the MLS on fire since he arrived back in 2013. Valeri has managed to rack up around 200 points every single season he has been in MLS (Minus a injury filled 2015).
Valeri is my obvious captain choice week in and week out. The scary thing is that Valeri is only getting better and better with Portland growing in strength around him. The additions of Blanco and Guzman will see Valeri rack up more points with the Timbers this season.
