CONCACAF Champions League Takeaways: Red Bulls vs. Whitecaps
By Gareth Wolff
Kekuta Manneh and Bradley Wright-Phillips scored as the New York Red Bulls and Vancouver Whitecaps drew 1-1 in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal first leg.
The Vancouver Whitecaps will be the happier team after Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal first leg clash with the New York Red Bulls. The Whitecaps came away from Red Bull Arena with a potentially crucial away goal, and avoided a loss despite playing with 10 men for the final 20 minutes of the match.
First Half
The Red Bulls controlled possession in the first half, moving the ball well through the midfield. They put pressure on the Whitecaps center backs whenever they had the ball. Sacha Kljestan came close to scoring from a free kick and Daniel Royer headed just over.
The Whitecaps, however, managed to look dangerous on the break, particularly in the wide areas. Kekuta Manneh and Cristian Techera in particular had a couple of good runs down the wing that were let down by poor finishing.
And it was the Whitecaps who struck first. In the 39th minute, Kendall Waston headed a corner kick down towards the Red Bulls goal, and Manneh headed it into the net off Red Bulls defender Justin Bilyeu’s shoulder.
