Smart Spending: The 10 greatest Designated Players in MLS History
By Mark Shannon
9. Guillermo Barros Schelotto
Boca Junior legend Schelotto who now serves as club manager had a great four-year career in MLS. In 2009 he became a full-fledged DP, but in our eyes he was a DP for all four-years. He was named a Best XI player in his first season with the Columbus Crew under Sigi Schmid.
In 2008 he bested the previous year with 25 assists, helping the Crew to a MLS Cup, while also receiving regular season and playoff MVP honors. Most of all the 35 goals and 48 assists in 109 including the playoffs are great numbers for a DP. If not for the new age DP Schellotto would have been higher on this list.
