Even without looking at statistics, it is easy to say that D.C. United was the dominant team during the first decade of MLS play. Their run during the first four seasons has only been matched by one club since. DC won the Eastern Conference in 1997, ’98 and ’99, as well as the Supporters’ Shield in 1997 & 1999. Even more impressive was making it to four straight MLS Cup Finals and winning three (’96, ’97, and ’99).
After a few down years the club would return to, and win, MLS Cup in 2004. Another three conference titles would follow, as well as some tough years. United failed to reach the playoffs five out of six years between 2008 to 2013. 2014 saw a dramatic turnaround taking the team from 10th in the East in 2013 to 1st in 2014. With a strong academy and plans to move away from RFK stadium, DC will be hoping to return to their glory days of the 90’s. However, winning over 42% of the franchise’s matches is not a bad place to be.
