The Crew are one of the ten charter members of the MLS, and are home to the first soccer-specific stadium built for the league. The club was competitive throughout the first decade, hitting their first high point in 2004 winning the Eastern Conference, but fell in the first playoff series that year. That was followed by three straight years without qualifying.

Then behind the force that was Guillermo Barros Schelotto, the club won two straight Eastern Conference titles in 2008 & 2009. The ’08 season marked the team’s first and only MLS Cup victory, a 3-1 defeat of the New York Red Bulls. Until last season, the club had secured 12+ victories for eight straight years, but fell to 18th out of 20 in 2016.
