San Jose has a unique history in MLS, and one that may not be known to MLS 2.0 fans. Originally the San Jose Clash, their 1996 to 1999 run saw them fail to make the playoffs three straight years and eventually move. The franchise would rebrand as the San Jose Earthquakes. Two MLS Cup seasons would follow in the next four years.

The franchise would then be moved and become what is now the Houston Dynamo. After a two year hiatus, the city of San Jose was granted a spot back in MLS reclaiming the name of the Earthquakes. While they haven’t replicated that earlier success, they have always been right on the edge of the playoffs. A Supporters’ Shield in 2012 was their best season since returning, but they have yet to return to the MLS Cup.
