MLS Preseason: Wednesday Review

The MLS preseason schedule is in full swing and three clubs were in action on Wednesday. 

Colorado Rapids vs. Ventura County Fusion

It was a 6-1 rout for the Rapids against NPSL side Ventura County. The Rapids only lead 1-0 at halftime, as Dominique Badji netted a goal within the first ten minutes. All of the remaining goals came in the second half, Marlon Hairston, Jamie Siaj, Liam Callahan and Caleb Calvert (two goals) recorded the tallies.

The young forward Calvert, had an impressive performance with the two goals and an assist. It was a better performance overall from the second half starters, as the two halves saw two completely different sides take the field.

D.C. United vs. Jönköpings Södra IF

D.C. United played their final friendly of their first training camp against the Swedish side. The home side took the win 3-2, as they held off the visitors in the second half after leading 3-0 at one point.

Goals came from Marcelo, Luciano Acosta and Sebastian Le Toux. It was Le Toux’s first goal for the club.

Emelec vs. New York City FC

The most exciting match of the MLS preseason took place in Ecuador as NYCFC traveled south for their second preseason match. It was played before a crowd of 40,000, which included a concert and fireworks show.

Emelec opened the scoring in the 41st minute as Aryton Preciado scored on the counter-attack. Preciado would double the advantage a few minutes into the second half to make it 2-0. NYCFC found their way back into the match when newly signed Ugo Okoli netted a goal shortly after. It appeared the home side would hold on for the victory, but a stoppage time equaliser from John Stretzer ensured a 2-2 result.

The first half of the match featured the likes of David Villa, Andrea Pirlo, Khirly Shelton and Jack Harrison. However, a host of changes were made in the second half, including Okoli, who scored his first goal for the club (see below).

As always, you can’t take too from the result of these preseason games, but it is great to see the new players getting minutes as each team figures out how they should start the 2017 MLS season.
