Houston Dynamo announce signing of Uruguayan Forward, Vicente Sanchez, who previously played for Schalke, Club America, Toluca, and Colorado Rapids.
Yesterday Houston Dynamo surprisingly announced the signing of Uruguayan forward, Vicente Sánchez. Sanchez is 37 years old and comes from most recently playing at Defensor Sporting in his hometown of Montevideo, Uruguay.
Sanchez has spent time playing in MLS before having played for Colorado Rapids from 2013 to 2015 and has had very successful stints playing in Liga MX. He played for Club America and Toluca having put up great numbers there, he scored a total of 96 goals in 291 games.
Vicente also had a nice little stint in the Bundesliga with Schalke 04 for two seasons playing 50 games and scoring three goals. He has featured for the Uruguayan National Team playing 31 games and scoring five times, as well as appearing in two Copa America’s. It is safe to say Sanchez has more than enough experience, or that the MLS is use to.
Player-Coach Opportunity
Wilmer Cabrera told reporter Corey Roepken that he sees Sanchez as a player-coach and doesn’t expect too many minutes from him. This makes plenty of sense considering the young forwards corps the Dynamo have assembled this offseason.
The goalscorer and journeyman will have much to contribute in molding the likes of Manotas, Elis, Quioto, and Torres. Many fans have shown their excitement to see their former Toluca star be wearing Dynamo orange this coming season, but also many have expressed their displeasure in signing a 37 year old striker.
Sanchez will be a great influence in the locker room to inspire and give a veteran presence to our young attackers, and it would be great to see him join the coaching staff in the future. Wilmer Cabrera stated also that he had to have him here in Houston after they built a relationship back when Wilmer was assistant coach of the Rapids at the same time Sanchez was there. Coincidentally enough, the last two goals Vicente Sanchez scored in MLS play were both against the Dynamo in a 2-2 draw back in the 2015 season.
