Colorado Rapids in negotiations with Man City for Bismark Adjei-Boatang

The Colorado Rapids have entered into negotiations with Manchester City for 22-year-old Ghanaian midfielder Bismark Adjei-Boatang.

A couple of weeks ago, many reports came out that the Rapids were interested in acquiring the services of Bismark Adjei-Boatang. The 22-year-old from Ghana was signed by the English giants back in 2012. He was immediately loaned out to Strømsgodset in the first division of Norway, where he has played for the last four seasons. In 100 appearances, Adjei-Boatang was able to tally 17 goals across all competitions. Here are some of his top highlights:

Looking at his highlights, you can see that he is a player full of speed, agility, and creativity. He also is full of hustle. Many of his highlights involve him tracking back in the midfield, a trait that can often go unnoticed but can provide game changing plays.

If he does come to Denver, I can see him playing most of the positions in the midfield. I think he would struggle to play the 6 role with the physicality that comes with the MLS, but anything else is fair game. Ideally, he would make a great number 8, which the Rapids don’t have in their 4-2-3-1 formation, so we must look elsewhere on the field. He has the speed and creativity to be a good wing player, but most rumors are saying the Rapids are looking to have him play the number 10 role Jermaine Jones played last year.  He is a young, creative player, so the Rapids probably hope they can mold him into their ideal number 10 over the next couples years.

One of the major questions this leaves us with is what is going to happen with Dillon Powers. The Rapids have played him at both the 6 and the 10 over the past couple years, but they have brought in reinforcements at both of those positions recently. They used their first round pick to the draft Sam Hamilton, and the acquisition of Adjei-Boatang could make the central midfield suddenly crowded. This could mean the Rapids are looking to move Powers, or these players could simply be brought in to bring depth behind. Look for this to be a developing story as we go into the preseason.
