MLS SuperDraft approaches quickly on January 13th, and Houston Dynamo find themselves with the 4th overall pick and a variety of options to draft from. Here we will dive into the best 3 options for the Dynamo.

Many Mock MLS SuperDrafts already have set who they think will go first, but as we know with the draft process in American sports anything can happen. Especially in MLS, as it is well known how often draft spots and picks can be traded. (I am looking at you Chicago & Philly) Let us not forget that the Dynamo also have the tendency to trade away anything for what seems like nothing. As of late Wilmer Cabrera has been leaning towards a heavily internationally based squad so I could see a trade for TAM/GAM and an international spot being arranged… Although it is not the best option.

More from Houston Dynamo

For Houston Dynamo there is a couple areas of need to be addressed on the team that could be addressed with SuperDraft(ee’s). First of all you have the highly coveted #10 role or Central Attacking Midfielder, the Dynamo Front Office have made it clear it is a position they need to fill. Let’s not forget about Right Back, Center Back, or another box to box midfielder (a #6 or #8 of sorts). Here are the 3 options to fill these voids for the Dynamo.

1. Jackson Yueill-CAM/CM (UCLA/ US U-20)

Jackson Yueill comes from the cold Minnesota climate but the young player could surely get used to the Houston heat after playing at UCLA for two years. Yueill has experience as a playmaking midfielder for the UCLA Bruins, and could be exactly what the Dynamo need at the position. Yes many fans are expecting a foreign signing at this position, but what do you have to lose in giving a US U-20 prospect a chance at pulling the strings of an attack? Yueill seems like the type of player to unlock a game with a simple through ball or a well placed free kick, but has also been said to have the ability to play from a deeper #8 role in the midfield. Point is he should be first on the Dynamo’s draft board if still available in the 4th pick.

2. Chris Odoi-Atsem- Right Back (Maryland)

Ever since Kofi Sarkodie fell out of form and left the Dynamo, it has been a trouble spot for the organization and Odoi-Atsem is the man to fill the spot. A stalwart defender for the Maryland Terps he could be an investment into youth the Dynamo needs. The backline is getting older with the likes of Agus and Machado already in there 30’s and Leonardo and Anibaba steadily approaching. Speaking of Jalil Anibaba was a versatile player for Houston last season but after Odoi-Atsem’s rave reviews after day 2 of MLS Combine is sure sounds like he would be an upgrade. In the video, his own coach speaks about how humble Odoi-Atsem is and how focused he is as he is one of the only players without a twitter. Call me crazy but this is just the dedication the Dynamo need.

3. Miles Robinson- CB (Syracuse/US U-20’s)

Last but not least Houston Dynamo could use a future USMNT prospect to man the defense next to the Panamanian International Adolfo Machado. It has been a while since the Dynamo had a USMNT defender in Geoff Cameron, so Miles Robinson would definitely be a warm welcome. The Syracuse Sophomore came away this 2016 with an all ACC first team selection and winning the ACC Defensive player of the year. If that doesn’t convince you Robinson finds himself in US U-20 national team and is very eager to get playing in MLS. In the video he says he is not worried about coming into MLS as a younger player as he is just honored to be living his dream. Robinson is a scoring danger on set pieces as seen at the MLS Combine and many Dynamo fans can already see him scoring some headers off of corner kicks in the near future.
