The Los Angeles Galaxy have reportedly opened talks with Manchester United regarding a move for Wayne Rooney, who could replace Steven Gerrard.

According to a report from The Sun, the Los Angeles “Galaxy have begun asking advisors how much Rooney would cost.” The report also a that asserts that Wayne Rooney would be a replacement for Steven Gerrard who could retire after this season. The star forward’s recent stint and form at Manchester United have this move making more sense by the day.

The Galaxy will have an open designated player spot if Gerrard does retire after the 2016 season but his contract is also up after the year. The club could use that to acquire the England captain in the winter transfer window. LA has a history of making moves for big name European players and Rooney would only add to that list.

Wayne could follow the likes of fellow English players such as David Beckham and Ashley Cole by making the move to Los Angeles. A number of other notable England internationals have recently made the move to the United States’ top-flight such as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. Rooney would be a welcomed addition to the Galaxy and MLS as well.

The 31-year old forward has long been a name stay in Man United’s Starting XI but since Jose Mourinho arrived as manager this season, he has only started in five out of the club’s eight Premier League games this year. He has only recorded one goal and two assists with a number of fans and media members calling for him to be dropped completely from club and country. He has been used as a substitute in the team’s past three domestic matches.

It is no surprise that the Los Angeles Galaxy are plotting, or at least inquiring, a move for Rooney. Numerous clubs from around the world including Inter Milan and some Chinese clubs want to make their bid for United’s front man next transfer window. Wayne is arguably the biggest name in English football and would immediately bring fans and commercial value to any club that he plays for.

The Liverpool native has played for Manchester United since joining the mega-club in 2004. The only other team that he has played for in his career was Everton. He has only played in England for his career so a move stateside would be an adjustment for Rooney. With his future in question at United, a move seems imminent.

A move of this stature would likely require a sizeable bid from Major League Soccer and the Los Angeles Galaxy. Fans in the United States would love to see Wayne make the move to MLS. It will be interesting to see if this moves actually goes through. We’ll keep a close eye on the situation and update when news is available.
