PSV Eindhoven and Mexico international midfielder, Andres Guardado, has once again been linked with a move to Atlanta United of MLS.

Atlanta United have long been linked to Andres Guardado and the rumors have begun to heat up once again. According to some recent rumors, “Guardado will announce move to @ATLUTD in 2017. (Contract at 3 yrs, $15 million)” as reported by Eric Gomez of ESPN. This is an exciting prospect for Atlanta and Major League Soccer fans alike.

The Mexican midfielder has been one of the best players in Netherlands over the past few seasons. He has had plenty of success for both club and country as he is a regular in the Starting XI for each. This would be a huge signing for the club that is ready to begin play in the 2017 MLS season.

Although the move would not happen right away as Gomez also reported that “Guardado would likely finish out the season with PSV and join mid-2017.” This may disappoint a few but it is the most likely move for both sides. It gives each club time to set up their squads and PSV a chance to find a replacement.

Andres has made over almost 60 appearances since joining PSV in 2014 but he has only scored two goals for the Dutch club. His influence has been felt thoroughly in the international game as he has made over 130 caps for Mexico. He has scored 24 goals for El Tri and has had an  immense amount of success on the international level with two Gold Cup wins and appearing in three World Cups.

The 30-year old midfielder has played for Atlas, Deportivo La Coruña, Valencia, and Bayer Leverkusen throughout his illustrious career. He has never played in the United States’ top flight league but he has considered a move to MLS before. That move seems like it will be happening sooner rather than later as Atlanta United will get a big name player who can make an instant impact and be one of the best midfield players in MLS.

Major League Soccer’s newest expansion franchise, Atlanta United, only have seven players currently on their roster as they get ready for the 2017 season. Hector Villalba is the team’s only Designated Player under contract but if they sign Andres, he would become their second.

The $5 million a year contract would make Guardado the eighth highest paid player in Major League Soccer. (Spotrac.com) Only a few midfielders would be paid more than him like Kaka, Michael Bradley, Steven Gerrard (may retire at the end of 2016), Frank Lampard, and Andrea Pirlo. He would join Giovani dos Santos as one of the most prolific Mexican players in MLS today.

Hopefully this move gets done and Guardado makes the move to MLS next season. Having him on Atlanta United’s roster would be great for not only the club but for the league as well. He is a great talent and adding him would increase the overall talent of Major League Soccer as the league continues to grow and sign big name talents.
