MLS Rumors: Napoli May Look to Make a Loan Move For Didier Drogba
Italian club, Napoli, are reportedly looking to make a loan move for Montreal Impact forward, Didier Drogba, of Major League Soccer.
According to Oluwashina Okeleji of BBC Sport, “Napoli are reportedly mulling over whether to make a loan move for #CFC legend Didier Drogba – as a replacement for injured Arkadiusz Milik.” The surprise move comes as a bit of a shock from both Napoli and the Montreal Impact forward. Although the move can not take place until the transfer window opens in January, Napoli are still trying to decide if they want to make the move or not. Nothing is final just yet as it is only a rumor.
The 38-year old forward is one of the most decorated strikers in Major League Soccer and around the world today. Known from his days with Chelsea, Didier has been with Montreal since 2015. When the Impact made him their designated player, they had to make a trade with the Chicago Fire in order to acquire him.
Even in his advanced age, Drogba has put up great numbers in MLS with the Impact. He has scored 21 goals in only 33 total games. (MLSsoccer.com) As a short-term option, Didier could thrive with Napoli as a replacement striker.

The Ivory Coast international may not be in his prime but Napoli are somewhat desperate to make a move for a talented forward and Drogba could be one of the best options. Didier has been crucial to Montreal’s success but he has become less and less relied upon as of late. In the Impact’s last two games, he was brought on as a sub for 20 minutes in one game and was an unused substitute in the other.
Throughout his illustrious career, Drogba has never played for an Italian club. Although, he has played for teams in France, England, China, and Turkey. It isn’t very often that an aging star like Didier makes a move from Major League Soccer to a top-European league and club like Napoli.
Napoli’s star striker Milik tore his ACL and will be out for six months. The Italian club will have to make due until at least January 1st when the transfer window opens. They are mulling things over and deciding whether or not to make a move for Drogba once the winter transfer window opens.
The Impact are gearing up for an MLS Cup playoff run in a few weeks and Drogba will likely play a major role for Montreal.
It will be interesting to see what happens going forward for Drogba. He has made a major impact on Montreal and on Major League Soccer over the past few years but a big move to Europe could be in mind for the aging striker. The MLS’ club may also be looking to move on from Didier so it could be a win-win situation for both sides. This is only a rumor but keep an eye on this for the future.
