Los Angeles Galaxy forward, Giovani dos Santos, started and scored a goal for the Mexican National Team in their 2-1 win over New Zealand.

Giovani dos Santos was recently called up to the Mexican National Team for their international friendlies against New Zealand and Panama. The LA Galaxy forward started, captained, and even scored in his international return. It had been over a year since Gio played for El Tri.

Dos Santos played an all-around great match and left a footprint on the game. His impact was clearly felt from the opening whistle til the end of the match. He got the start in the number 10 role for Mexico as n attacking midfielder.

GdS was the lone player from Major League Soccer to start in the match as New Zealand and Portland Timbers’ goalkeeper, Jake Gleeson, was on the bench for his side. Gio not only played well but he scored his 18th international goal and first ever penalty for Mexico. He constantly delivered great balls from corners and set pieces as well.

Dos Santos scored the opening goal in the game after Hirving Lozano was fouled inside the penalty area. Mexico were awarded a penalty and captain Giovani dos Santos stepped up the spot with confidence and buried home the ball into the back of the net. New Zealand fought back when Marcos Rojas scored an equalizer in the 46′ minute but Marco Fabian’s goal in the 56′ minute turned out to be the match winner for Mexico.

On the Univision broadcast of the match, Gio was named the man of the match. Although he was named the man of the match, there were a few downfalls to his performance. He did miss a few chances to score and also turned the ball over a few times.

Although it was only an international friendly against New Zealand, it was still an encouraging outing for the Los Angeles Galaxy player. This match took place at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee where around 40,000 people showed up to watch the game. This was a huge game for not only Gio but also for Major League Soccer as a whole. One of their best players played a prominent and important role on an international stage.
