Houston Dynamo vs New York City FC: Key Moments

David Villa’s lone goal led New York City FC to a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo as they picked up three points on the road and moved atop the Eastern Conference.

In a match between one of the Eastern Conference’s best teams in New York City FC and the Western Conference’s worst in the Houston Dynamo, many expected an easy win for NYCFC but Houston put up a fight for most of the night as they had their chances in this one. It proved a difficult task for New York but they came away with three points nonetheless.The talent and skill of David Villa turned out to be the difference maker.

This match had a quiet first half but NYCFC were able to ramp things up a bit in the second 45′. The New York based club are still without Frank Lampard but David Villa continues to produce with his scoring touch. Andrea Pirlo and rookie sensation, Jack Harrison, were also featured in this affair.

NYCFC moved up into the top spot in the East ahead of Toronto FC and the New York Red Bulls. New York City FC are now 14W-9L-9D on the season with 51 total points and only a few games left in the regular season. With the loss, the Dynamo remain at the bottom of the West with a 7W-12L-11D record and only 32 points.

Scoreless First Half

The first half was a bit of a snoozer as both sides struggled to create much of anything going forward. There were few shots and few chances. It was a lackluster first half and it was more of a feeling out process for both sides. Luckily, there would be more action in the second 45′.

NYCFC Strike First

New York City FC found a breakthrough goal early in the second half as they took a 1-0 lead. David Villa scored his 20th goal of the season in the 52′ minute to put his team ahead. His scoring strike came from a difficult angle but the Spain international found a way to put it through the keeper’s legs and into the back of the net.

David Villa Puts the Game Away

David Villa secured the full three point for NYCFC when he scored his second goal of the night in the 90’+1 minute. The brace for Villa gives him 21 goals on the year which puts him one goal ahead of Bradley Wright-Phillips for the league lead. El Guaje is now leading the race for the Golden Boot Award.

The Houston Dynamo will be action again on Saturday, October 8th against the Colorado Rapids. This game will take place over the course of the international brake so both sides may be without a few key players. In their next match, New York City FC will be on the road as they take on D.C. United on Sunday, October 16th.
