New York Red Bulls vs Montreal Impact: Three Key Moments
The New York Red Bulls clinched their spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a close 1-0 win over the Montreal Impact.
The New York Red Bulls battled it out with the Montreal Impact as they were able to walk away with a close 1-0 win. The full three points for New York helped them clinch a spot in the playoffs for this season. They are only the fourth team to clinch a spot so far this year and the third in the Eastern Conference.
Montreal had plenty of chances to find a goal in this one as they had five shots with three of them on target. At the end of the night, Daniel Royer’s goal in the second half was the difference maker. This will be the seventh straight appearance in the postseason for the Red Bulls as they have made it ever year after 2009.
New York now sits tied for the top spot in the East with Toronto FC and New York City FC at 48 total points. Their 13W-9L-9D record has them in the hunt for the Supporters’ Shield. The Impact are in fifth place in the East and one point ahead of DC United. They are barely over the red line with 38 points and a 9W-10L-11D record this year.

1. Piatti’s Near Goal
Ignacio Piatti almost got the scoring started early for Montreal. He made a great run in the 7′ minute as he beat multiple Red Bulls’ defenders. His shot sailed just wide of the goal as it barely missed the post. In truth, he was unlucky to score after his great effort.
2. Montreal’s Keeper Keeps Things Level in the First Half
Impact goalkeeper, Michael Bush, made a great save late in the first half to keep the clean sheet for the time being and to keep the game scoreless. He made a quick reaction save in the 41′ minute on Daniel Royer who put his header on goal after a great cross from Chris Duvall. This was the best of Bush’s six saves for the match.
3. Daniel Royer’s Match Winner
New York Red Bulls’ midfielder, Daniel Royer, got his revenge on Bush in the 60′ minute. Yet another great cross from Duvall found the head of Royer who headed the ball down and found the back of the net. This was Daniel’s first goal of the season and it ended up being the game winner in this one.
The New York Red Bulls will return to action on Tuesday, September 27th against Antigua GFC in CONCACAF Champions League play. Their next MLS match will be at home against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, October 1st. The Impact will return to Montreal to take on the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday, September 28th.
