Sporting Kansas City started their franchise under the name Kansas City Wizards. The name change came in 2011. In 2000, they won their first MLS Cup after a fantastic regular season that saw them win their only Supporter Shield. It was 2004 that the first U.S. Open Cup was won, they would have to wait eight years to see the next major trophy, which proved to be another Open Cup victory.
In 2013, the club won its first MLS Cup under the name Sporting Kansas City. They defeated Real Salt Lake in a penalty shootout to win it all. Just last year they added a third U.S. Open Cup to the trophy case.

Preki had a storied career for Kansas City as a two-time league MVP and the clubs all-time goAlso, he was a member of the MLS Cup winning team in 2000. Peter Vermes was also a member of the championship winning team and was MLS Defender of the Year in 2000.
More recently the club has had a group of fantastic players. Graham Zusi, Dom Dwyer, and Matt Belser are some of the players that have stood out for the club in the past few seasons. Dwyer is a potent striker up top and Zusi has been fantastic in the midfield. The defender Besler is a mainstay on the squad and has been a member of the U.S. national team in past international competitions.
