San Jose Earthquakes :It’s Time For Adjustment In The Lineup
By Jesse Tapia
The San Jose Earthquakes yet again missed out on an opportunity Wednesday to take over the sixth spot in the Western Conference standings so it is time for change.
They faced off with a struggling New England Revolution squad and could not put the ball in the back of the net once again as the Quakes drew 0-0 with the Revolution.
They only managed to take seven shots the entire game and were only able to put one on target. When the defenders and midfielders are doing their job it could be frustrating to see that the forwards aren’t doing theirs.
The players up top have been this team’s weakness all season long. They’ve been holding the team back from achieving a playoff spot.

It’s been no secret about how the Earthquakes have struggled to score so why has Dominic Kinnear continued to put out the same lineup week in and week out? The Chris Wondolowski and Quincy Amarikwa partnership has not worked out at all this season plain and simple. Amarikwa has only scored three times this season and Wondolowski’s play isn’t what it has been the last few seasons.
Dominic Kinnear should look into making changes with this Earthquakes lineup. Their chances of making the MLS playoffs will be slim if they continue putting out the same lineup that can’t score. Kinnear runs the most basic formation in soccer with a 4-4-2. The formation itself isn’t the problem obviously but trying out something different could provide a spark for this team in this playoff push.

Kinnear could look to insert another midfielder such as Shea Salinas or Fatai Alashe and play with only Chris Wondolowski up top. The Earthquakes are a team that likes to play down the side and send the ball into the middle of the box. If the Earthquakes were to do this Wondolowski’s play could benefit as this style fits him better.
Kinnear also could also swap out Amarikwa for recently acquired striker Henok Goitom. Goitom is more of a complete striker and Amarikwa could be a spark for the team coming off of the bench. It could be asking a bit much for Goitom to start as he has only been with the team for a few weeks and their could be chemistry issues with him and Wondolowski but Kinnear needs to do something.
With San Jose traveling to take on the Columbus Crew Saturday and Quincy Amarikwa coming off with an injury in Wednesday’s game this could be a good time for Dominic Kinnear to try something new. Something needs to be done because the lineup Kinnear is putting out now isn’t getting the results the team needs for their playoff push.
