The creation of the USL saw the rivalry between the two Cascadian teams deepened. The Sounders went 16-11-5 against the Timbers throughout their time in the USL and it also saw the creation of the Cascadia Cup, a tournament played between the Whitecaps, the Timbers, and the Sounders. It’s first trophy was handed to the Whitecaps in 2004 and before the Sounders left for the MLS,
they came away with 2 Cascadia Cup trophies
, while the Timbers didn’t win one until the Sounders’ MLS move.
The biggest game of the Sounders-Timbers rivalry during the USL days was on July 22, 2006. In front of 2,993 Sounders fans at the once Quest Field, Seattle, though being pulled level 1-1 after Kreamalmeyer scored a penalty kick for the Timbers in the 17th-minute, claimed a 3-1 victory. During the game, there were 8 yellow cards and 1 red card, showing just how intense the game was.
The final game of the Sounders-Timbers USL run was on August 7th, 2008. Sebastian Le Toux scored the only goal in the game, giving Seattle the win.
