Seattle vs. Portland is the biggest rivalry in Major League Soccer, arguably the biggest in American sports in general. Here’s a look at the history behind it.

All of the United States knows that the rivalry between the Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers isn’t just something the MLS pushed for rivalry week. It isn’t just something that started a few season ago because of a few heated games. This rivalry extends throughout history, from the founding of the Sounders and the Timbers in 1974 and 1975, respectively. Now, any fan of these two teams–even if they are fair-weather fans–understand the intense hatred between the two clubs and the how the fans feel towards one another.
