February Early Award Predictions
By Zach Lahey
Can anyone believe it is February already? It is almost exactly a month until opening day in Major League Soccer. Every fan of MLS is looking for one thing: predictions. This is our early predictions for the winners of the MLS end of the season awards.
MLS Defender of the Year
The MLS Defender of the Year in 2016 will be Matt Besler of Sporting Kansas City. Besler won the award back in 2012. He has not played his best in the past couple months especially after his center back partner Aurelien Collin left Kansas City. Look for Besler to step up and be in the best form of his career.
MLS Rookie of the Year
The Rookie of the Year Award will be given to Richie Laryea. Back to back years of this award given to a player of Orlando City SC. Laryea will begin on the bench but make his way to the starting XI. Laryea has a lot of potential. If Laryea does not win the award, look out for his teammate, Hadji Berry.

MLS Goalkeeper of the Year
The AllState Goalkeeper of the Year will be awarded to one of the runner ups in 2015. Which one will it be Hamid or Ousted? David Ousted will win the award in 2016. Ousted stepped up for Vancouver in 2015 and he will have an even better 2016 campaign. The Vancouver Whitecap is a very valuable asset to the organization and will be an important asset for the teams run next season.
MLS Comeback Player of the Year
Year after year, players come back from injuries. The player that will make a come back and have a huge 2016 season is Sean Johnson. Johnson’s season ended early due to an injury he suffered in net. He has proven to be a stalwart in net for Chicago and his national team. Another potential player to be selected for this award is Will Johnson.
Landon Donavan MVP Award
This prediction will come as a shock to many of you. My selection for the MVP Award next season is Sacha Kljestan. Kljestan had a great end of the season where he helped lead a New York Red Bulls team to the Supporters Shield. Yes, many other players contributed to the teams success in 2015. In 2016, Kljestan will prove how good he really is and lead this team back to the playoffs.
