Top Goalkeepers to Watch in 2016
By Zach Lahey
There has been many great goalkeepers in Major League Soccer history. Players like Tony Meola, Donovan Ricketts, Nick Rimando, and Zach Thorton have been great goalies for their respective clubs in MLS. With the 2016 season fast approaching, which goalkeepers will have success? Here are five goalies to watch out for in 2016.
5. Luis Robles
Robles won the 2015 AllState MLS Goalkeeper of The Year award and had his best year too date. Robles is a great reaction goalkeeper who has been a lifesaver for the New York Red Bulls. He has had a great career with the Red Bulls and he will look to win the award in 2016 as well.
4. Steve Clark
Why is he on this list you ask? Clark did not have a great season last year. In the MLS Cup, he made a mistake in the first two minutes which caused Diego Valeri to score the opening goal. He is not a bad goalkeeper but it will be interested to see what Gregg Berhalter does in 2016. It will be an interesting situation in Columbus, to see if Clark keeps his job.
3. Andre Blake
Blake is a former #1 overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft. Blake was the starting goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union late in the season due to injuries. In his first career start, he saved ten shots which is now a Union single game record. Blake had success late in the season and it will be interesting to see if he carries that over in 2016.
2. Jesse Gonzalez
Gonzalez made ten appearances for FC Dallas in 2015. He helped FC Dallas make it to the Western Conference Finals. He played extremely well in 2015 especially late on in the season. Similar to Blake, Gonzalez is a young goalkeeper that will continue to make an impact for Dallas in 2016. Watch out.
1. Sean Johnson
Johnson was drafted in the 5th round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. He has made several appearances for the United States Men’s National Team and has proven to be a stalwart in net for the Fire. His 2015 season was cut short due to injury and that is why he is the No.1 goalie to watch in 2016. Watch out for Johnson to come back better than ever.
