One of the first signings the Impact made as members of MLS was locking up a dependable goalkeeper. Donovan Ricketts was just the man for the job. At the time, the Jamaican international had appeared in more than 200 professional matches and was the Goalkeeper of the Year in 2010.

While capable of making jaw-dropping saves, Ricketts was guilty of letting in the occasional bad goal. With the summer coming to a close, the Impact were looking for a more stable ‘keeper.

Troy Perkins provided just that and they acquired him in a straight up swap with the Portland Timbers. The trade worked out well for both sides.

Ricketts was the starting netminder for two whole seasons in Portland and once again won the Golden Gloves in 2013. He was eventually picked up by Orlando in the expansion draft and is now the backup.

Perkins would be the goalkeeper during the 2013 season, Montreal’s best since joining the league. However, he would wear out his welcome in the disastrous year that was 2014 and his option for 2015 was declined. Perkins is now with the Seattle Sounders, although he has yet to make it into a game.

The American left the Impact as the franchise leader in all major goalkeeping categories, including saves and clean sheets.
