This is the MLS Multiplex on the FanSided Network of 24/7/365 sports news and analysis, and we continue our series of reflections on the MLS All-Star Games of the past with a look back at the 2010 MLS All-Star Game. This edition of the MLS All-Star Game took place on July 28, 2010 at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Tex. Jorge Gonzalez was the man in the middle for this encounter, which drew a crowd of 70,728, rivaling that of the first MLS All-Star Game at Giants Stadium in 1996.

The MLS All-Stars faced their sternest test yet: Manchester United, who were still managed, at the time, by the great Sir Alex Ferguson. Man U were more than just Wayne Rooney and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. United also included stars such as Tom Cleverly, Federico Macheda, Darren Fletcher, Park Ji-Sung, Paul Scholes, Danny Welbeck, Ryan Giggs, Edwin van der Sar, Nani and Dimitar Berbatov. The interesting note from this match was that Rooney was not in the traveling roster for this contest; in fact, he wasn’t even needed.

That’s because the MLS All-Stars weren’t exactly up to par with Man United in terms of talent, but they did hold their own in this contest. Notable players from this contest included, Landon Donovan, Omar Gonzalez, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Juan Pablo Angel, Dwayne De Rosario, Jaime Moreno, Brad Davis, Brian Ching, Shalrie Joseph, Sebastien Le Toux, Nick Rimando, Donovan Ricketts, Jamison Olave, Javier Morales and Chad Marshall. Kyle Beckerman was also selected but was unable to play due to injury.

Man United set the tempo with a brace from Macheda in the first and 13th minute of play. Ching pulled one back in the 64th minute, but goals from Man United sub Darron Gibson (70′), Cleverley (73′) and Hernandez (84′) put the game out of reach. De Rosario did throw the last punch in the 90th minute for the MLS, who suffered their second straight defeat in the All-Star Game, 5-2. Macheda was named Man of the Match for his first-half brace.
