That being said, we open up a new year of fun on the Plex with our reflections of the 2001 MLS All-Star Game. This game, which saw the rise of Landon Donovan’s long road to soccer immortality, took place on July 28, 2001 at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif. Noel Kenney was the man in charge for this match, which drew 23,512 in attendance. This was also the first-ever time, and only time so far, in which an MLS All-Star Game ended in a draw.

  • It wasn’t just Donovan that was the star in the West, although he did more than enough to earn Man of the Match honors. (We’ll break down when LD scored for the record: it was the third minute, seventh minute, 19th minute and second minute of stoppage time.) The West were also led by Jeff Agoos, Marcelo Balboa, DaMarcus Beasley, Mauricio Cienfuegos, Cobi Jones, Ronald Cerritos, Ariel Graziani, Dema Kovalenko, Jesse Marsch and Luis Hernandez.

As for the East, they also had their share of top guns. The East featured Tim Howard, Nick Rimando, Mike Petke, Mamadou Diallo, Brian McBride, Alex Pineda Chacon, Pablo Mastroeni and Marco Etcheverry. McBride shined the brightest amond the East All-Stars, and both he and Howard would go on to solid careers in England.

Other goalscorers in this contest for the West included Ariel Graziani (26′) and Kovalenko (69′). McBride’s brace in the 34th and 39th minutes powered the East, but others stepped up, including Chacon (28′), Diallo (53′), Jim Rooney (84′) and Cate (87′).

The MLS Multiplex will continue its look back at the MLS All-Star Games with reflections on the 2002 edition tomorrow. Don’t miss it.
