After an embarassing mismatch last year in the All-Star Game, Major League Soccer elected to go back to a West vs. East format. The West had a number of impressive players to their arsenal, including Alexi Lalas, Cobi Jones, Marcelo Balboa, Preki, Chris Armas, Raul Diaz Arce, Carlos Hermosillo and Robin Fraser. The East, meanwhile, had a strong lineup, with players such as Eddie Pope, Jeff Agoos, John Harkes, Marco Etcheverry, Carlos Valderrama, Brian McBride, Roy Lassiter, Jaime Moreno and Joe-Max Moore.

Like the 1997 game, this turned out to be a shootout for the ages. Just seconds into the match, Lassiter opened up the scoring to make it 1-0 to the East. But the West would fight back. Preki evened the scoring in the 13th minute, Roman Kosecki gave the West a 2-1 lead at 32 minutes in, Cobi Jones made it 3-1 to the West in the 36th minute, and Prekie secured his brace in the 38th for a 4-1 West half time lead.
But things would get interesting in the second half. Now it was the East’s turn to spice things up. Moore’s spot kick conversion cut the West’s lead to 4-2. In the 73rd minute, Valderrama made it 4-3 to the West and Stern John delivered the second equalizer of the contest to make it all square at four goals apiece.

The West, having been tormented by the East for too long, pulled out all the stops late. Mauricio Wright gave the West the lead in the 84th minute, and Ronald Cerritos put on the finishing touches in the 89th minute to give the West a 6-4 victory in a 10-goal thriller. For his brace, Preki was named the Man of the Match.
