MLS International Call-Ups In Review
By Sean Maslin
Sometimes you have to look beyond your own borders to see what is really going on. Despite the U.S. Men’s National Team putting on two abject performances (although the U-20 team did quite well) MLS had a very good international break.
Although only four players scored goals, MLS will be represented in every major international domestic cup competition next year. With Rais Mbolhi and Ambroise Oyongo helping Algeria and Cameroon qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, they will join Tim Cahill of Australia in the AFC Cup, Raul Fernandez in the Copa America (as well as players from Jamaica and maybe Erick Torres from Mexico,) and a whole bunch of CONCACAF players playing in the Gold Cup as players who will represent MLS and their country in top international competitions.
While this is certainly a positive, there is of course always a downside. As players continue to get international exposure they will likely find themselves the targets of clubs from abroad. MLS seems to be doing quite well at finding diamonds in the rough. Will they need to do it again? Time will tell.
One other thing: some of these matches are very difficult to find statistics on. So if you have any additional please let us know. Sadly the feed for the Guam-Hong Kong match did not exist.
