Dom Dwyer grabbed headlines in Week 17 for his “selfie” celebration, but in Week 18 against the Montreal Impact the Sporting KC striker grabbed headlines for scoring a late winner that was apart of a brace for the 23 year old in a surprising 2-1 win over SKC that looked like it was heading for a draw before Dwyer’s second goal.
With play staggering to a halt as both sides looked satisfied for a point, hustle from Dwyer in running down a back pass to the keeper was rewarded when the struggling Impact turned over the ball in a howler that allowed Dwyer to poach a winner for SKC close to the 90th minute in a moment that stunned frustrated Montreal supporters at Stade Saputo.
The late goal wouldn’t earn many style points anywhere, but it counted just the same as Dwyer now has 14 goals in the 2014 MLS campaign for Sporting and most importantly followed up his bit egregious celebration in the Chicago Fire match with a performance that proves why Dwyer deserves headlines in the United States for more than just his creative celebration skills.
There is a possibility that Dwyer could be the top scorer in Major League Soccer in 2014, something that many wouldn’t have predicted before the start of the season and something that also shows the amount of young talent currently in the league. At a young age Dwyer is having himself a breakout season, something that is arguably more important for MLS growth than the dominating performances we saw out of Henry and Defoe this Saturday.
