Formations

Formations are completely based on personal preference and play style, so if you have an idea of what your preferable formation is, you can probably skip this section. But if you’re not sure on which formation to go with or want some ideas on how to arrange your players, these are my top picks for formations using the best players MLS has to offer.

4-1-2-1-2(2): I personally use this formation to utilize all of the great center midfielders available. Bradley, Cahill, Zusi, and Dempsey all work together to create passing nightmares for the opposition, and can take long shots as well. Up front, I have Johnson for heading, and Defoe (IF) for dribbling and finishing.

4-2-3-1: Another formation that takes advantage of MLS midfielders, since they are able to cross, pass, and shoot very well. Also, Bradley and Alonso as the CDM pairing is absolutely amazing.

4-3-3(2): The options for the midfield here are interesting. Putting Bradley or Alonso in the CDM spot is a must, but you can get very creative with the two CM positions, who can play more on the offensive side of the ball since you have one midfielder hanging back. Cahill and Zusi would probably be your best bets at CM, but don’t rule out Kleberson. I personally use this for silver MLS squads, as the LW and RW will have to be silver anyway.

3-5-2: If you’re good with 3-back formations, you can create chaos with MLS players. Put the Sporting KC trio of Collin, Besler, and Opara for your 3 CBs and watch them lock everything down. Zakuani and Chavez at LM and RM have the necessary speed to get back and help defend. Bradley and Alonso at CDMs (as usual) and Dempsey at CAM. Top it off with a pair of strikers that compliment each other and you have a very threatening squad.

5-3-2: On the flip side, if you have trouble defending in FIFA 14, this may be the better option for you. Again, put the KC trio in the middle, flanked by your full backs of choice. For this formation, I would suggest putting Bradley in the middle CM position over Alonso due to how well-rounded his stats are, which is a plus in a formation that is trading in a player for an extra defender. Again, I suggest Cahill and Zusi (and possibly Kleberson) on the outside CM positions.

And that’s all of my FIFA 14 knowledge I can drop on you in one article. Hopefully, this guide helped you in your player selections for your MLS squad and gave you a better idea how to utilize them properly.
