Defenders scored big in Week 10 of the MLS Season.

There were lots of double game week players in MLS this weekend, only two made it on the team of the week, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was a poor week for them. Matt Besler and Benny Feilhaber were the two to make the squad, but there were plenty of points to be had among Toronto FC players as well.

For the second straight week, Florian Jungwirth was the top scorer, establishing himself as one of the top gets in fantasy this year. C.J. Sapong’s late hat trick was also a big get for those who were inspired by his Fresh Prince video and picked him up.

Three Hits and Misses of Week 10

Hit: Big Money Defenders

If you invested big on defenders this week it paid off. Five different defenders that cost $6.0 or more got you at least 10 points. Along with the three team of the week players (Jungwirth, Besler and Matt Hedges) you also got a big payout from Justin Morrow and Daniel Steres.

Miss: Sebastian Blanco

It’s been a struggle for Portland without Diego Valeri in the line up. Throw in Blanco’s struggles and things are even rougher. Blanco had just one point in their wipeout against San Jose. He’s gotten over five points in just one of the past five match weeks.

Hit: Miguel Ibarra

A lot of people strayed away from the Minnesota midfielder due to the matchup against Sporting Kansas City. Those who took the risk were rewarded as SKC rested half of their starting backline and Ibarra took advantage with two assists.

Miss: Aaron Long

Long was a popular pick due to his low price and two games this week. The Red Bulls defense instead let in six goals and Long only had 4 total points. The three late goals against Philadelphia were especially painful for fans an fantasy owners alike.

Hit: Toronto Strikers

Neither hit the team of the week but both big names scored big. Sebastian Giovinco got two on Wednesday and had 15 points. On the weekend Jozy Altidore tagged in and scored 14 while getting the game winner in an MLS Cup rematch.

Miss: Alec Kann

A popular low buy among keepers, Kann hasn’t lived up to his early season numbers. Four points is decent, but he hasn’t scored over five in his last four tries. Atlanta has some tough matches coming up so it might be sensible to drop Kann for the foreseeable future.

Three Players to Pick Up

Zack Steffen

Steffen has been a good cheap buy, and has two matches this week. If he can get past Toronto in good shape, his 180 minutes this week could be big for your team.

Jonathan Spector

The Orlando defense has been super salty at home. This week they take on a Sporting KC team that won’t have Dom Dwyer due to yellow card accumulation. The center back is a safe option for some points this week.

Jozy Altidore

Jozy has been streaky his entire career, so take advantage of this good run of form while you can. He probably won’t play all of both games this week, but his chances of grabbing a goal seem high.
