Sporting Kansas City breaks through for 3 goals against a makeshift Colorado defense

The confetti falling at Children’s Mercy Park was a welcome sight for Sporting Kansas City fans. Colorado didn’t have their first choice backline due to multiple injuries, and Sporting KC took advantage to the tune of a 3-1 win.

The defense looked solid and Tim Melia had a big save that fans are accustomed to seeing, but the story of the day was the offensive output.

Goal 1: Seth Sinovic, 6th minute

This goal was created due to the strength Sporting has on the right side and the new pieces in the Rapids’ defense. Graham Zusi sprung Gerso Fernandes down the wing. His cross is a prime example of sending a ball in the box to make something happen. Kortne Ford, who was making his MLS debut, had a miscommunication with Tim Howard. The ball fell to Seth Sinovic who made no mistake.

Sinovic has a couple of playoff goals, but this was his first regular season goal in over 150 appearances with Sporting KC. The goal was just a sign of things to come for SKC.

Goal 2: Gerso Fernandes, 58th minute

Counter attacking 101. Dom Dwyer had some nifty moves in midfield, found Roger Espinoza who weighted a perfect through ball and Gerso did the rest. He favors his left foot very strongly and the finish with the outside of his foot seemed to catch Howard off guard. After the second goal, Sporting KC seemed very comfortable and was playing free and with creativity.

Goal 3: Dom Dwyer, 85th minute

Again SKC turned defense to offense with lightning speed. As Sinovic took advantage of the space left behind, Dwyer got past Jared Watts who was slow in transition. Dwyer had spent most of the match getting under the skin of centerbacks as he’s known to do. Having the opportunity to get the chance to run behind him and finish the cross of perfectly was a satisfying way for Dwyer to finally break his goalless streak.

The win was the most complete of the year save for the late penalty conceded. Sporting Kansas City had 58% possession, completed 86% of their passes, and nearly had 100 completed passes in the final third. After a rough start to the year, Sporting’s offense had a game to remember.
