Today, we reflect on the 2004 MLS All-Star Game, which took place on July 31, 2004 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. This was the last time that the MLS All-Star Game would feature the Western Conference taking on the Eastern Conference.

The reason: originally this was supposed to be a match between the MLS All-Stars and Real Madrid. However, Real, the current World Champions as of this article date, elected to play friendlies in Japan and so the original team format for the game was reintroduced one last time.

Before this match, a celebration of the 1994 FIFA World Cup saw the USA Men’s National Team of 1994 face the MLS International Stars in a 50-minute scrimmage. The game finished in a 2-2 draw. Despite the change of plans, both teams that played in the MLS All-Star Game had their share of notable faces.
The East were led by Jon Busch, Frankie Hejduk, Shalrie Joseph, Freddy Adu, Amado Guevara, Alecko Eskandarian, Steve Ralston, Chris Armas, Eddie Pope and Jaime Moreno. Clint Dempsey and Ben Olsen were unable to partipate due to injury. As for the West, they featured Landon Donovan, Jovan Kirovski, Jason Kries, Chris Klein, Jeff Agoos, Kevin Hartman, Carlos Ruiz, Brian Ching, Pablo Mastroeni and Jimmy Conrad. Danny Califf and Josh Wolff were unavailable for this game due to injury.

Guevara gave the East a lead they would not relinquish with goals in the 20th and 22nd minutes of play. Ching pulled one back in the 43rd minute to make it 2-1 East at the break. Eskandarian’s 74th minute strike would go on to be the game winner. Kreis added one late in the 89th minute but the West’s rally would fall short. Guevara went on to win the Man of the Match for his heroics.
